The village

It was in the 12th century that Bishop Conrad of Trento laid the foundation for the idyllic village of Neumarkt – once known as the “Burgum novum Egne.” A catastrophic flood in the 13th century didn’t stop the little town’s development – it was reborn as the “Neue Markt.” Due to its privileged location along the Via Claudia Augusta trade route, Neumarkt blossomed into a thriving trade center during the Middle Ages. Today, our village still reflects that glorious age, with its majestic estates, inner courtyards, and the characteristic arcades built between 1300 and 1600. The community was recently bestowed with the “Il borgo più bello d’Italia” award and is now counted among the “most-beautiful villages of Italy” – in recognition of its timeless appeal.

Neumarkt has not only been used as a backdrop for motion pictures – it’s also a paradise for nature-lovers. The village’s approx. 5,200 inhabitants bask in the Mediterranean climate and enjoy the nearby Trudner Horn Nature Park. The Castelfeder Biotope with its unique vegetation harbors traces of its prehistoric, Roman-era, and medieval past. Hikers will love the Bletterbach Gorge in Aldein, in the Fleims Valley, in Montan, or on the shores of pleasant Lake Caldaro. Cyclists can take to the Etschdamm Trail and follow it all the way to Verona. And ski-enthusiasts will find the ideal playground in which to indulge their passion in the Fleims Valley. Historical sites like the Kaldiff ruins (which date back to the 12th century) and the “Klösterle” pilgrims’ hospice offer the perfect opportunity to journey into the past. Markets with regional products and the famous “Lauben” Festival in August add to the rich cultural heritage of this area. And let’s not forget the famed Pinot Nero variety of grape that thrives here, and which is celebrated every spring during the merry “Blauburgunder” Festival!
